In a little-known verdict, two publications, Daily Wire and The Federalist, won a judgment against the State Department earlier this spring on account of its attempts to get them officially classified as
“disinformation”:

The State Department on Wednesday settled a censorship lawsuit with the Daily Wire and The Federalist, agreeing to a legally binding settlement – approved and enforced by a court – that gives the media outlets 10 years of oversight for compliance to the deal.

A federal judge entered the so-called “consent decree” on Wednesday for the lawsuit that was filed in 2023 to ensure that, over the next decade, the department does not fund efforts to deem news outlets “disinformation,” the Daily Wire reported. The plaintiff media outlets will be compliance monitors until 2036.

Daily Wire offers more details:

In 2023, The Daily Wire and The Federalist sued the State Department after President Joe Biden’s administration used its Global Engagement Center to fund and promote companies that worked to bankrupt conservative news outlets by deeming them “disinformation.” The Daily Wire, represented by the New Civil Liberties Alliance (NCLA), demonstrated in the case how the State Department’s Global Engagement Center (GEC) was used during the Biden administration to deliberately target disfavored news outlets.

Over the last few years, we’ve been documenting here at Mind Matters News the attempts to control and censor the internet that are very popular with governments and elites across the globe. This is one of the few setbacks they have so far received. In Canada and many countries in Europe, the censors are having better luck.

For a quick catchup on censorship, here are some links:

● Remember the Disinformation Governance Board? Intended by the federal government to rule on misinformation, malinformation, and disinformation supposedly disseminated to Americans, it was shouted down in 2022. Based on its history, the term “disinformation” refers simply to information the government does not want citizens to know, for whatever reason.

● Who are today’s would-be disinformation police? Social scientists writing at Scientific American explain how they hope to use an “inoculation technique” to insulate the public against accepting wrongthink. (2024)

● What are the information controllers’ aims? First, their concept of disinformation has nothing whatever to do with truth or falsehood…

Based on worldwide trends, it is fair to say that the would-be disinformation police are not gone in the U.S.; they are more likely waiting for a favorable moment.
