The Daily Mail offers its typical paragraph-length headline:

Wimbledon in chaos after AI line judge bungles call against Sonay Kartal’s opponent – who claims mistake ‘STOLE’ her game and alleges pro-British bias days after Emma Raducanu took a swipe at the technology. “

James Sharpe,” July 6, 2025

Then:

“Wimbledon were embroiled in yet another embarrassing line-call controversy as Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova accused officials of pro-Brit bias after the HawkEye technology failed to call a ball out in a crucial game against Sonay Kartal.” …

Chair umpire Nico Helworth clearly saw the ball was out, and attempted to stop play, before the automated line judge called out ‘Stop! Stop!’ to halt the action.

After a delay of around four minutes, while Helworth sat on his court-side phone to get to the bottom of the farcical situation, he declared: ‘The electronic line-calling system unfortunately was unable to track the last point so we will replay the point.’

Sharpe

Sharpe, a sports reporter, comments, “The Championships have been marred by dodgy decisions since the controversial decision to scrap traditional human line judges in favour of AI – and it has now been made even more farcical that the umpire is unable to make their own decision when the system fails.”

Intriguing scenes!

Pavlyuchenkova thinks Kartal has put her forehand long and stops before the Brit slams back a winner.

Wimbledon blamed the system on “operator error.”

AI may or may not mean more accurate decisions but it will mean decisions made due to events that would never otherwise have occurred.
