At the Science Dilemma podcast, Allan CP and Jeff Singer help students strengthen their intellectual and moral fibre against onslaughts of discreditable theorizing from academia. One example would be “The human mind is simply what the brain does!” Thus, they invited neurosurgeon Michael Egnor to share some insights:

Neurosurgeon says The Mind Is Not the Brain ft. Dr. Michael Egnor
(Science Dilemma Podcast), July 7, 2025 (17:39 min)

Dr. Egnor is the author, along with Denyse O’Leary, of The Immortal Mind (Worthy, June 3, 2025), which makes the case for the existence of the immortal human soul:

From his comments on the podcast:

Michael Egnor: I came to [3:22] realize, as I read about it more and studied it more, that the Darwinian way of understanding the world and the materialist atheist way of understanding the world is not at all proven. It’s actually really bad science. It’s junk science.

And it’s just what you’re supposed to say. It’s the cultural trend. And I decided to buck the cultural trend and search for the truth. And when you search for the truth, the truth is God. and and God explains everything. He explains the mind. He explains the Big Bang. He explains DNA. He explains the incredible way that our body works. He explains the the joy and the beauty and the love that we have in life. He accounts for everything.

Allan CP: Did you get much pushback on that journey? I mean, just as you were transitioning into not being a materialist, were you still getting pushback or were you supervocal yet? Egnor: Well, I didn’t get much pushback in my personal life. I was fortunate. First of all, I’m very fortunate that my day job is as a doctor. So I sort of just get paid for doing what I’m doing.

Whereas, I think if I were a pure research scientist, it would be very hard for me.

And I actually have friends who are very prominent research scientists, prominent nationally, who’ve told me privately that they totally agree with me. They’re very devout Christians but they dare not say a word in public. … One guy told me, you know (and he’s one of the world’s experts on brain science) “If I ever publicly said that I support intelligent design or I support dualism — you know, the belief that we that we have a soul — I’d never get another grant. That would be the end of my career, you know.”

And he said, “My wife is ill and she needs health insurance. I’ d lose my insurance cuz nobody would ever pay me again.”

And that’s just if he held a personal view there, like he wasn’t even in inputting it into his research. He would still get ousted just because of that.

In that sort of atmosphere, it wouldn’t matter much what the evidence was, one way or the other. The search is for only as much truth as a materialist view of the universe can accommodate.

But Dr. Egnor made clear that there is much other evidence for the reality of the human mind. One thing that stood out was the commenters’ appreciation of a cordial discussion of often-controversial topics.
