Networking as a strategic tool

Marks added an essential perspective on networking, stressing the value of facing fears and engaging with influential figures. He recounted personal experiences where stepping out of his comfort zone led to profound and unexpected benefits. This act of courage — initiating conversations with influential individuals — often opens doors to valuable relationships and opportunities.

By removing financial and other worries, Copps allows his team to channel their energies into creative and productive endeavors. This strategy has paid off, with his company boasting a remarkable retention rate.

Copps also discussed recasting the notion of failure. Rather than seeing setbacks as failures, he suggests viewing them as learning opportunities. This approach encourages continual iteration — assessing what happened and deciding the next best course of action. This philosophy cultivates resilience and encourages a growth mindset. It reframes failure as a natural part of the innovation process.

Authenticity and integrity emerged as foundational themes. Copps and Marks both emphasized always doing what is right, even when it is challenging. Marks summarized this with the advice:

Do what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, whether you like it or not.

If I were to put something on my tombstone, it would be that, “He was somebody that sought greatness in every person he met.”
