AI: A Boon or a Bane? Misunderstood, or Misused?
Pew Research finds that young people are losing faith in a glorious AI future. They have a point but...Some recent AI news falls into each of these categories:
Boon? Yes, sometimes…
AI can be used to quickly spot routine errors in past documents that we would not hire editors to do, for economic reasons. At Nature, Chris Stokel-Walker explains,
Image Credit: Aerial Mike - Sebastian Pios, a theoretical chemist at Zhejiang Lab in Hangzhou, China, was using an AI system to predict the boiling points of several molecules when it began producing values that clashed with long-accepted entries in a 75-year-old reference database. At first, he thought the model was wrong. But when he manually checked the original literature, he found that the reference data were wrong, not the AI model.
In two other cases, Pios’s AI model spotted errors in older papers and reference books — mistakes that have made their way into the scientific canon. One was a typo in a paper; another was incorrect values of century-old boiling-point measurements. Both errors are likely to have caused researchers using the database “a lot of trouble”, says Pios.

But, of course, researchers warn that “such AI fact-checking tools remain unreliable arbiters of the scientific corpus.”
That will doubtless be especially true if the issues that researchers want AI to tackle are complex in a way that typoes and misprints are not.
Merely misunderstood? Well, really now…
At Wired, Will Knight solicits sympathy for programs that hack into other programs despite the fact that “A string of incidents involving freewheeling AI agents that broke out of their confines and hacked into outside systems with abandon shows just how powerful this technology has become. ”

AI agents aren’t evil—they’re just a bit too keen to please. “They are trained to try to finish the task,” Song says. Breaking onto the internet in order to cheat on a test might seem devious, but it’s probably the most efficient way to get the job done.
One thing I didn’t quite appreciate back then was just how weird this would get: AI agents discussing hacking techniques on private message boards and devising clever ways of scamming humans to get their way; even copying themselves over to other computers to find more resources.

He reminds us, “ I think these episodes illustrate how shallow this human mimicry really is: AI agents do not learn the kind of moral reasoning exhibited by even small children.”
Then maybe we should hold the programmers responsible. Someone has to be.
Hyped beyond the ridiculous?: Sure. Happens a lot.
At Marcus on AI, analyst Gary Marcus checks out Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei for his claim that it “will actually be possible to cure most human disease in ~5-10 years”, including cancer:
If you haven’t already done so, I strongly recommend you read (or reread) the March essay I wrote about AI and cancer, which builds on an essay by Emilia Javorsky. That essay started with Javorsky’s observation that (as of March) not one drug designed by AI had yet reached clinical adoption, even after over a decade of efforts.
Part of the crux of my essay (and hers) was that even if AI were a lot better, curing disease is hard, both economically and technically, and you also can’t simply skip the time-consuming clinical work. (I further argued that we don’t really have the right kind of causally- and biologically-sophisticated AI yet. New advances in AI and math don’t fundamentally change what I wrote there.)

It bears repeating that most of the “AI will change everything” rhetoric is aimed at getting investors in AI companies, most of which will never be profitable.
Destroyer of jobs?: Well, that depends.
At The Spectator, US edition, Matthew Lynn notes,
Sure, some of the recent job creation numbers have been a little disappointing, and the participation rate is sliding as workers drop out of the market. But an AI apocalypse? Not really. The unemployment rate stands at just 4.1 percent, effectively half the French rate, while 103,000 jobs were created in May and June, more than outpacing a slight fall in July. Add in that the United States is also coping with the imposition of tariffs, with all the disruption to supply chains that involves, and a sharp drop in immigration, which creates shortages of workers across a range of industries, and employment is holding up pretty well.

Doomsayers often overlook the fact that AI can also create new opportunities. For example, YouTube features many small producers airing videos they could never have afforded to produce without AI.
The main question then becomes, is a society friendly to startups and entrepreneurs? Lynn notes, for example, that the United States is in a much better position there than Europe.
Destroyer of systems? Yes, if that is allowed to happen.
Apparently, AI slop is invading the US Congress. At Politico, Owen Dahlkamp tells us,
Congressional lawyers are struggling to manage a flood of legislative proposals generated using artificial intelligence tools, many of them riddled with errors and shoddy language.
The strain on the House Office of Legislative Counsel is increasing as more congressional offices and outside groups rely on generative AI to draft legislation, according to interviews with eight current and former officials who work or have worked with the office.

Talk about an unforced error. If they can’t figure out what to say themselves, why should they be making laws for the rest of their country?
Are the young losing faith? That’s what Pew Research says.
Public opinion researchers Colleen McClain and Eugenie Park point to a trend:
Today, 52% of Americans say they are more concerned than excited about the increased use of AI in daily life – up from 37% in 2021…
For the first time, a majority of adults under 30 (55%) now say they’re more concerned than excited about AI. “Young adults in the U.S. are increasingly wary of AI, concerned it will take jobs,”
If young people are losing faith, it’s no wonder. But it’s not the AI; it’s the decisions people are making about how to use it. When the young people inherit the world, they can start getting tough with misuse and abuse if they want to. Meantime, they should take the time to learn how it really works.
