Oppenheimer Steals the Show
Cillian Murphy wins Best Actor, Nolan Best DirectorThe Oscars took place last night, and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer won big. The film’s star, Cillian Murphy, who played the controversial father of the atomic bomb, scooped Best Actor, with Nolan nabbing Best Director and Robert Downey, Jr. claiming Best Supporting Actor for playing Oppenheimer’s vengeful political opponent, Lewis Strauss.
The film scored 13 total nominations, more than any other film in history. Emma Stone won Best Actress for her performance in Poor Things, eclipsing Lily Gladstone, who stunned audiences with her quiet, brilliant performance in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Overall, though, the story of the Manhattan Project and its earth-shattering consequences dominated the show. In his acceptance speech, Murphy told the crowd that, for better for worse, we’re all living in Oppenheimer’s world, and paid tribute to “all the peacemakers” out there in the world today.
