Monday Micro Softy 23: Barnum’s Circus Receipts
Circus master Barnum's ticket seller had not kept proper track of the tickets sold. Can the limited information — and some algebra — help Barnum figure it out?
This week’s Micro Softy is short and sweet:
For admission to his circus on opening night, Barnum charged $5 per man, $2 per woman and 10 cents per child. After the show, Barnum wanted to know how many men, women and children attended. But the ticket seller had not kept track. All Barnum knew was this:
Total earned at the ticket booth: $100
Number of attendees: 100.
Is this enough information for Barnum to calculate how many men, women and children attended?
Solving this one requires some algebra and clever thinking.
Solution to Micro Softy 22: Two Daddies?
Here’s last week’s puzzle: Timmy Johnson and his dad were in a car accident in which Dad was killed. Timmy was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. The surgeon came in, looked at Timmy and said, “I can’t operate on this boy. He’s my son.”
How can Timmy be the surgeon’s son if his father was killed in the accident?

If you didn’t solve the puzzle immediately, as my seven year old grandson Kameron did, you should be embarrassed.
The surgeon was Timmy’s mother.
See you next Monday for another Micro Softy and the solution to Micro Softy 23 above.

Here’s Monday Micro Softy 22: Can there be two daddies? The solution to last week’s puzzler lies in things we can do with binary numbers. This week’s puzzler asks: Can a child’s father be dead and alive at the same time? Or is there another solution?
